Who would have thought that in 1952, a local “bathing beauty” competition spearheaded by Catalina Swimwear in Long Beach, CA would transform into an international annual tradition with countless young women around the world vying to become a part of Miss Universe history? As millions of fans have watched around the globe, the contest has evolved into a powerful, year-round, international organization that advances and supports opportunities for these young women.
These women are savvy, goal-oriented and aware. The delegates who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals, who compete with hope of advancing their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who seek to improve the lives of others.
Uzuri International Is New Miss Universe Jamaica Franchise Owner
Uzuri International is honoured and extremely pleased to announce their acquisition of the Miss Universe Franchise for Jamaica, heralding a new beginning for the Miss Universe Jamaica pageant with innovations in the contestant recruitment process, contestant training, management of the winner of Miss Universe Jamaica represents her country at Miss Universe. On occasion, when the winner does not qualify (due to age and other factors) a runner up is sent and the production of the annual coronation showcase.
In addition to securing the usual partnerships to effectively execute the Miss Universe Jamaica pageant, prepare and manage the title holder for local and international representation, Uzuri International also plans to develop, expose and partner with young and emerging fashion design, costume design and entertainment talent and showcase these talents as an integral component of the pageant. Uzuri International will align the local pageant with its international counterpart, showcasing the prestige, glamour and professionalism usually associated with the Miss Universe Organization and will elevate the pageant to a level where Jamaicans have a greater appreciation for Miss Universe Jamaica, are eager to be stakeholders and rally to extend their full support and be part of what is hoped that they will view as a worthwhile and positive movement. Most importantly, however, Uzuri International will place very strong emphasis on providing the contestants with key skills to equip them for the demands of today’s challenging corporate environment, extending valuable benefits to them beyond the immediate competition.
Over the years, Uzuri International has worked very closely with the organizers, contestants and title holders of Miss Universe Jamaica, formerly the Miss Jamaica Universe Pageant and had the pleasure to be producers of the 2003 coronation show, where Michelle Lecky emerged winner and went on to represent Jamaica in Panama. That coronation showcase is still talked about in beauty and fashion circles as one of the most exciting. Also to Uzuri International’s production credit are – the annual Carnival Calabar Queen pageant and Destiny’s Child Charity Fashion show – both international events held annually in Calabar, Nigeria and for which they execute producer’s duties under the A fashion Affair brand based in Atlanta, Georgia.
“We are ecstatic that the Miss Universe Organization has shown the confidence in our ability to effectively represent their brand in Jamaica and that they share our vision for the direction of Miss Universe Jamaica, which is quite a big deal, overall, not to mention, a major step in the Uzuri International career portfolio! We are fully cognizant of the tremendous duties and responsibilities that come with this and we are honoured that we are given this additional platform to serve Brand Jamaica and continue to make a positive impact on the development of our young talent here and by extension, the development of Jamaica. We are fully aware that past organizers have had many challenges, so we know that this will not be a ‘walk in the park.’ In this regard, we want to form new and nontraditional alliances in the pageant industry, alliances to bring beauty factions together, where Jamaica benefits, as this should not be about any one individual, or company. We are also anticipating that the sponsors will be on board with us, as we seek to market and promote their brands with exciting and innovative concepts to engage their clientele and attract new interest in their products and ours. Needless to say, we are extremely excited, rearing and ready to go and fully committed to the related tasks that lie ahead!” Said Karl Williams, National Director for Miss Universe Jamaica and Artistic Director of Uzuri International.
